Training Requirements

All workers to be trained and competent in the use of portable ladders and working around electricity. Ladders to be checked daily.

Supervisor to be appropriately trained, qualified and competent in OH & S and electrical practices for the task

Safe Work Practices

All personnel to maintain a tidy work area on site at all times. PPE is to be worn at all times on site. Hand tools to be checked regularly. Barricading to be used as appropriate to protect others form working below elevated work.

Supervisor Responsibility: Supervisors are responsible to facilitate and/or provide proper instruction to their workers on protection requirements and training. Work site inspections and selection of equipment.

Worker Responsibility:

1.All ladders shall be inspected prior to performing work.

2.Wooden ladders shall not be painted.

3.Conductive metal ladders or wire or wire reinforced wooden ladders shall not bepermitted in energized areas.

4.Ensure surface is level and firm.

5.Ensure ladder is tied off and set at the proper angle.

6.Ladders should not be climbed higher than the third step form the top.

7.Three points of contact should always be maintained when climbing up or down.

8.Ladders should not be erected on boxes, tables, scaffolds platforms, man liftplatforms or on vehicles.

9.A ladder shall not be placed against an unsafe support.

Safe Job Procedure
  1. Select appropriate ladder for the work to be done. Metal or wire ladders should not be used for any electrical work.
  2. Inspect ladder for condition. Do not use any damaged ladders.
  3. Secure ladder. Ensure 4:1 erection with stops/bracings on both top and bottom according to manufacturers specifications.
  4. Ascent/descent of ladder. When ascending/descending ladder ensure 3-point contact at all times. Carry no material while climbing. Always face the ladder and keep within styles.
  5. Working on ladder. Never work on top two rungs of ladder, never reach outside the sides of ladder.
