Safe Work Practices
Protecting workers from injuries associated with the use of power and hand tool use. Power and hand tools are to be used and maintained in compliance with manufacturer guidelines.

Supervisor responsibility: supervisors are responsible to facilitate and/or provide proper training. Review the project and prepare a list of required tools.
Worker Responsibility:
- Electric tools must have 3 wire (grounding) cord and plug, excluding double insulated tools.
- Grinder discs, buffers and stones to be used only for designed application and at rated speed.
- Stationary grinders must have properly adjusted tool rests and stones to be properly dressed.
- Angle grinders to have original guard
- On/off switches must be functional and positioned so operator has access.
- Accessories can only be used that are designed for use with the tools specified.
- Saw blades must be designed for the product being cut and at the rated speed guards must be in place and functional.
- Chisels, punches, screwdrivers, etc. to have tips properly dressed.
- Cracked and /or splintered handles to be replaced.
- All tools must be cleaned after use and repairs made before being properly stored.
- Tools to be used for designated purpose only
- Repair to tools must be performed by qualified personnel

Safe Job Procedure
- Check for loose clothing, hair or jewelry. Ensure all clothing is secured before operation of machine.
- Check on and around machine for loose materials and debris. Work area should be free of debris, material and any oil or other slippery substances.
- Check to make sure machinery is in good working order. Make sure drill bit is inserted tightly, not bent and in good working order.
- Engage machinery. Ensure material is properly secured( back stop or clamp). Check that all necessary guards are in place, and stop/start mechanism are working and easily accessible.
- While machine is in operation ensure complete attention while working. Do not work quickly- disengage machine when not in use.
